AFRICANEWSWIRE.NET (August, 20 2012) : 13px; line-height: 19px">According to sources, Pfizer Inc. a leading multinational pharmaceutical corporation is on the verge of getting the approval for a new drug for treating rheumatoid arthritis. The new drug, named tofacitinib is a janus kinase or JKA inhibitor that inhibits the protein that causes joint destruction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Although the drug was approved by the authorities in May, more follow-up studies were required before it can be put on the market due to its potential safety risks.Tofacitinib showed a few serious side effects that included lymphoma and other cancers and serious infections. However, sources revealed that the benefits of the drug significantly outweighed the potential safety risks. Pfizer Inc. has hailed the drug as one of its most promising prospects. They state that the safety risks of the drugs are similar to all other rheumatoid arthritis drugs. However, an official of the approval committee stated that the risk of cancer proved higher in the new drug than that of other rheumatoid arthritis medications currently on the market. Human trial of the new drug was administered in 5 or 10 mg doses twice a day and proved to be safe with minimal side effects. However, four deaths were recorded during the study, although Pfizer claims that only one death was directly responsible or related with the medication. If the new drug is approved and does well, on the market, Pfizer stands to regain sales and profits that fell significantly after their cholesterol drug, Lipitor, lost its patent protection last year. Approval of tofacitinib will give Abbot Laboratories’ Humira, the contending rheumatoid arthritis a run for their money.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis condition that is exceedingly difficult to treat. The disease attacks the smaller joints of the hands and feet, and damages ligaments and tendons. It may even lead to deformity. The disease can also cause severe damage to internal organs. The most prevalent symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are intense pain and inflammation. The disease is incurable, and medication can only provide relief from its symptoms. This disease is more prevalent in women than in men.
The head of Marketing and Sales of Big Mountain Drugs (BMD), a high end international pharmacy provided his views on the news of the new medication. “Rheumatoid arthritis is an extremely painful condition. News of a new drug, irrespective of side effects, may be extremely welcome by some patients, while others may prefer continuing taking their normal medications. There are several rheumatoid arthritis medications available on the market. These include Arthrotec, Vimovo, and Arcoxia. These drugs and many more are available at BMD at extremely low prices”.
Continuing further on the subject the Big Mountain spokesperson added, “Approval of the new rheumatoid arthritis drug will mean more treatment options for patients. This is good news, as most patients find that some drugs lose their efficacy after taking them for some time. We will be watching and waiting for tofacitinib to enter the market. Once it does, our customers can be assured of the ability to purchase the drug at reduced prices”.
