Approval of New Diet Drugs May Solve Obesity Issues

AFRICANEWSWIRE.NET (August, 20 2012) : 13px; line-height: 19px">Obesity is a growing problem for many Americans. According to sources, 34% of US adults are obese. More than a third of this includes children who are either overweight or obese. More and more people are suffering from various health issues related to obesity. A person who is overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as a person of normal weight. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, gout and cancer. Sources say that losing at least 10 pounds will significantly reduce these health risks.

People suffering with weight issues will find the news of the approval of two new diet drugs surprising. This is because a new diet drug has not been approved by authorities, for the last 13 years. The last diet drug approved by authorities was Xenical, a drug that works by blocking the body’s absorption of fat. Two new diet drugs have been approved and will be on the market before the end of this year. Qysmia, manufactured by Mountain View and Belvic, manufactured by Arena Pharmaceuticals are the two weight loss drugs. These drugs were declined by authorities, in 2010, but were approved this year when safety data were presented.

The efficacy of the new weight loss drugs were proved during clinical trials. However, patients on Belviq lost approximately 5% of their total body weight which was considerably less than Qysmia. Qysmia users lost approximately 10% of their total body weight. These two drugs may be the answer to many obese people and may, in the long run, prevent health issues related to obesity. Although the efficacy of the drugs is proven, there is no guarantee on how well the drugs will do on the market. This is because of the previous problems with the drugs, as well as, the drug prices. Qysmia and Belviq are estimated to cost $100 to $200 a month.

“The price of new drugs can be extremely high. This prevents many patients from purchasing prescribed medication.” stated a spokesperson from Big Mountain Drugs (BMD) a reputed Canada pharmacy.

According to inside information from the pharmaceutical labs, Qysmia works in combination with phentermine and topiramate to suppress appetite. Belviq (lorcaserin) works by making the person feel full after eating small amounts of food. Both drugs were declined, in 2010, due to various issues dealing with health risks. Qysmia was found to be instrumental in causing side effects of depression, memory-loss and birth defects. Belviq was rejected by authorities because of tumour development in rats during its clinical trials. However, currently, authorities are taking no chances with the newly approved diet drugs. Therefore, Qysmia will not be prescribed to obese heart patients as it increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.

“Our customers can be assured of low prices when the drugs enter the market. We care about our customers’ well-being and, therefore, strive to ensure that they are able to purchase prescribed medication without any problems. Meanwhile, patients with weight issues can purchase weight loss drugs, such as, Xenical and Lorqess from us at low prices” stated the Big Mountain Drugs spokesperson.
