Anemia is a condition in which the body doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells. In healthy people, kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO) that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. In dialysis patients who have chronic kidney disease, kidneys fail to make enough EPO. As a result, the bone marrow makes fewer red blood cells leading to anemia. Omontys stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells and reduces the need of blood transfusions in patients with chronic kidney disease. Omontys is administered as a once a month injection, hence more convenient than other once a week injections.
