Because the weight of the snow increases as it melts and refreezes to ice, it is very important to remove the snow and ice as soon as possible.
Antony explained how ice damming occurs when the heat in the attic melts the snow on the roof. The snow melts and accumulates at the roof ends or inside gutters, then refreezes. As the process reoccurs, it causes ice to build up toward the peak of the roof and underneath the shingles. From there, it can melt into the attic and interior of your home.
Consumers can buy a roof rake from their local home improvement store to remove snow from their roof when it exceeds four inches of accumulation. Applying calcium chloride over ice will cause the ice dam to melt, said Bradley. This is safe for shrubbery and grass. Be careful because the ice could melt onto your ladder and refreeze on the rungs causing a slip hazard.
