AFRICANEWSWIRE.NET (June, 15 2012) Utah — June 14, 2012 —Last month the Technology director for the Department of Technology Services for the state of Utah - handed in his resignation to the state, due to a failure on his part to safeguard the private data related to hundreds of thousand of Utah citizens. According to sources, the data was accessed by unidentified hackers. Governor of Utah, Gary Herbert has promised to design a comprehensive plan to prevent such future incidents. Just a few months back in Utah, there was a massive breach of data related to Medicaid recipients and children’s health insurance program. The state of Utah is providing free credit monitoring for the victims. Hackers who had stolen those medical records had been identified to be from Eastern Europe. According to Jonathan Ladd, chief security analyst for New Softwares, this dramatic rise in data theft across the country is nothing new to him. “As more and more information is carelessly stored in servers, it’s bound to get hacked, since most people don’t believe that data security is a serious matter.” says Ladd. Experts agree that there’s not much people can do when they apply for Medicare or Medicaid, except trust the state government to keep their private information confidential. Organizations, whether private or public should protect their customers data by encrypting it and then storing that data in encrypted format on back-up servers. Doing so can eliminate the risk of data theft completely.
