AFRICANEWSWIRE.NET (June, 24 2012) : 13px; line-height: 19px">A research team from Griffith University has found evidence of a new gene that causes migraine. They have identified a new region on X chromosome that plays a role in migraine attacks. A gene involved in iron regulation in the brain is implicated and there may be other migraine susceptibility genes on the X chromosome. The role of the genes on X-chromosome may explain why so more females than males suffer from this disorder. Identifying the various genes responsible for migraine is very important as it helps understand migraine and to develop better ways of diagnosing and treating this debilitating disease. Study was funded by National Health and Medical Research Council and involved 300 participants from a large multigenerational family from Norfolk Island.
About 12% Americans, nearly 28 million, suffer from migraine. More females (17% among women) than males (6% among men) are affected. Migraine has become a big burden on national economy too due to the man hours lost, decreased productivity and healthcare costs. In spite of the vast number of people suffering from the disease, Migraine is still an under-diagnosed and under-treated disease. At present the best treatment regimens reduce the frequency and severity of attacks by at least 50%. Avoiding factors that trigger attacks helps sufferers to avoid attacks. Top Triggers for migraine attacks are changes in weather, hormonal changes/menses, stress, alcohol, missing a meal, and some foods.
There are many drugs used in treating migraine. People who take too much of pain killers sold over the counter, such as paracetamols and aspirin, are at high risk of other complications from over dosage.
A spokesperson for the leading Canada pharmacy Big Mountain Drugs (BMD) said “We carry most of the drugs that are used in treating migraine.
